Underwater Tutorials

April 29th, 2013 by Melissa

Hi ya everyone, Melissa here today!  Unfortunately, I’ve had no time to put together an underwater tutorial as my research job kept me busy all weekend!  However, I didn’t want to leave you hanging and there are some GREAT tutorials out there already on how to color an underwater scene using Copics.

The first tutorial by ArtByKarenEHaley is wonderful for those shimmery water scenes.

The next, is one is a gorgeous way to color underwater with nice streaming lights that pierce the water depths.  Check out tutorial by Barbara of Forgotten Scraps at Make it Crafty right HERE.

Both tutorials offer some fantastic methods on how to get those images such as mermaids, seahorses and underwater objects to look life-like!

Coloring Metals

March 11th, 2013 by Melissa

Hi ya everyone!  Melissa here today to share a simple metals tutorial.  Copic has some great color combos for metal.  I chose T0, T1, T3, T5 and T7.  However, I wanted to share another combo that’s fun for metals: Y21, Y26, Y28 with a touch of E13 for gold and for bronze try an E13, E97, E99 (this also works for a rust look).  The most important thing to color metals realistically is a shine or a rusty appearance.  I add a streaky look as well to give a brushed metal appearance by adding strokes in long thing flicks.

I wanted to show you this SOG image Toasted and Toastie as well.  I used the same simple method I showed you above but concentrated on adding shading and shine to certain areas of the toaster based on a google image.  It’s simple to look up an image and add the highlights and shadows to places according to a photograph.  Again, I used the same strokes as I show you in the tutorial, but add more shading and contrast.

Cleaning Gunky Tips

January 28th, 2013 by Melissa

Hi ya everyone!  This month we’ve shown you how to fill your markers, clean your markers, and now we are going to show you how to clean you gunky tips.  Often when you color repeatedly with earth tones and reds you’ll notice a blotchy sticky mess, either on your marker nib or your paper while you color.  Today, I’ll show you what to do without having to throw those gunky nibs away!  A few things to keep in mind, always have a new nib in case your old one gets torn when being pulled out of the maker and keep around the matching various ink so that you can add a few drops after replacing the cleaned nib.
